Judicial Appointments to the Western District of Washington

Announcement Regarding Judicial Appointments
to the United States District Court
for the Western District of Washington

As a result of the move to senior status by Judges Marsha Pechman, Robert Lasnik and James Robart, there are three current vacancies on the federal bench in the Western District of Washington. The duty station for each position is in Seattle. In 2015, Senators Murray and Cantwell, working in conjunction with Congressman Reichert, stood up a bipartisan Judicial Selection Committee to screen, interview, and recommend candidates to the two U.S. Senators, as has been Washington State's tradition since 1997. Following that selection process, five candidates were recommended by the Committee to be nominated.  The five candidates previously selected remain submitted by the Senators for consideration by the President.

In light of the change in administration and the time elapsed since the initial recommendation, Senators Murray and Cantwell and Congressman Reichert have reactivated the Committee process to consider new applicants for nomination by the President.  Applicants who applied in 2015 are also encouraged to reapply.  The Committee will then make recommedations to the two Senators as to any additional qualified candidates and the Senators will make a final recommendation to the White House.  The Judicial Selection Committee is a bipartisan committee with members appointed by Senators Murray and Cantwell and Congressman Reichert.

If you are interested in being considered for appointment to any of these three vacancies, you will be asked to provide the Committee with personal background and professional information in the form of responses to the required judicial application. Only individuals who have fully completed the application and provided the requested materials will be considered. After review of responses to the application, the Committee will determine whom it will interview. The deadline for completing the application and providing the required information is June 15, 2018.

The application is available on the Court’s website ( as well as the website for the Federal Bar Association ( and shall be submitted electronically to the Committee Co-Chairs listed below. All applications will be held confidential by the Committee. They will be reviewed by the Committee and may be shared with the Senators, Congressman Reichert, and the White House. Any nominated candidate will be subject to a full background investigation by federal law enforcement and shall submit all materials required by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
